MAHLER'S SECOND. CAMBRIDGE PHILHARMONIC AT ELY CATHEDRAL.
When Leonard Bernstein decided to film a performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony (‘Resurrection’) he chose Ely Cathedral. Now the magnificent space will be the venue for a memorable farewell concert to the erstwhile MD of the Cambridge Philharmonic. Timothy Redmond, the firebrand of Cambridge music, is stepping down after 21 years and he is going out with a gigantic bang. Mahler’s epic symphony is one of the most awe-inspiring pieces of music ever written. The huge orchestra – including 10 horns, 8 trumpets and the organ of Ely Cathedral – will be joined by massed choirs and two world-class vocal soloists, Katherine Broderick and Yvonne Howard.
Says Redmond, ‘My first ever concert with the Phil was at Ely Cathedral and so it’s always had a very special significance to me. Some of our finest concerts have been played under the beautiful Octagon, and I’m absolutely delighted that my last concert leading the Cambridge Philharmonic is going to be in Ely.’
What a way to bid farewell! This should be firmly in your concert diary. Watch out for a Cambridge Critique review to follow.
