MUSIC SOCIETY ROBINSON COLLEGE - FILM MUSIC CONCERT

MUSIC SOCIETY ROBINSON COLLEGE - FILM MUSIC CONCERT

What ‘s your idea of an end of term performance? Something formal to struggle through before you have a few drinks and say farewell. ?  Not so at Robinson College where a quirky concert had its amused audience entertained over a delightful half hour in the glory of the College Chapel.

What a line up of talented but stylishly insouciant players.  For a fun start super accomplished , Daniel Morgan on piano helped Soprano Anrie Killan give us two fab numbers from ‘Chicago’- lovely singing in ‘Roxy ‘and even better ( the relaxation sets in)  ‘Funny Honey’. Anrie set the tone nicely as we segued steadily on to Ennio Morricone’s Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso  ( I list my favourite numbers btw, so you can check’em out online). What you won’t get there though is a Saxophone rendition as given by Maddie Melville Smith who breathed pleasure in the peerless piece. Simply golden gorgeous. All solos under the musical control of conductor Daniel Morgan.

Who could do a concert of modern musicals without Stephen Sondheim?. Taryn Young ripped off one trainer for the effect of a collapsed Cinderella for her version of the master lyricist’s  ‘On the steps of the Palace” .Kooky and fun this Soprano had us smiling throughout. And she had a gorgeous voice.

Pirates of the Caribbean got the surprisingly. large and glorious Grange Road Orchestra treatment for Klaus Badelt- with ex-Cinders Maddie Melville Smith conducting. And Howards Shore ( arranged by Bob Cerulli) did a grand job on Highlights from Lord of the Rings - there was a ripple of delight from children on the front row. Finally Johnnie Vinson with Disney Film Favourites, one of which I was pleased to see included Jungle Book, old but great. Again the Grange Road orchestra but with Jamie Ellis wielding the baton.

Bright , fast and fun – well done the Music Society . Audience was certain all the players had a solid classical repertoire up their collective sleeves, but this was a burst of joyful contemporary artistry to send everyone off in a holiday mood.
