MAGMA RISING AT THE HEONG GALLERY

MAGMA RISING AT THE HEONG GALLERY

Sara Rawlinaon ‘Erupt’

‘We had just finished installing 7 Seismometers. On six of the Northern Mariana Islands ( South of Japan, east of the Philippines ) . It was the middle of the night and we were sailing back from Agrihan to Saipan. While sleeping on the top deck under the starry sky, I was woken by our Captain ’ Sarah. What is that?? Rubbing my eyes, I saw him pointing at a dark cloud with lightning on the far horizon. I mumbled ‘ It's just a storm’ Rolled over and closed my eyes. He woke me again several hours later. ‘But Sarah. that storm hasn't moved.” We watched it for a while in the disbelief of darkness. Once the sun had risen just enough, we realised that we were indeed witnessing the volcanic eruption at Anatahan Island. The sun rose, turned that plume into a glorious set of purples, reds and oranges set against a deep blue sky.’ It was Mother’s Day 2003

Sara Rawlinson account opens the fascinating exhibition ‘Magma Rising’ at the Heong Gallery. No wonder she gave up natural science for the world of art ( hers is the painting above).

Keith Grant Fire Island

This is an awesome world of terrifying violence. Human beings have known it for millenia – there is even a cave painting on the walls of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave in southeastern France, made some 36,000 years ago. It features red daubs, interpreted as a spray of volcanic matter. Scientific findings confirm volcanic activity in those years. And of course in recent times there are. the great works of Turner who was drawn to ‘the dancing forms of flickering flames on his canvases.’ in the words of Art historian and Keeper of the Heong Gallery, Rachel Coombes. She also. writes of the Japanese artist. Hokusai's. The Great Wave of Kanagowa 1831 now part of. Japanese identity.

Emma Stibbon – BLAST

This is a bold and brilliant exhibition from the Heong Gallery. and heralds a flurry of talks and seminars as departments collaborate to discuss its importance. It has every aspect of art and science in respect to vulcanology. There are some. wonderful paintings -plus a fabulous challenge to walk in the footsteps of Jules Verne Into the centre of the earth. There are exhibits. and illustrations which will have your head spinning. The hugely. daring and entertaining film maker and scientist, Clive Oppenheimer, collaborator with Werner Herzog , terrifyingly enough, makes his contributions as have all the Icelandic. Artists who have contributed towards this extraordinary exhibition

Do not miss the chance to.experience in art and history this amazing part of our Planet.

Huge congratulations to the Heong. Awe and wonder are seldom captured in one space through art and. scientific discovery - 16. artists mostly from Iceland.have contributed to this mind blowing. exhibition

.And it doesn't end there because. there are activities and lectures for children and adults. On Wednesday 5th March, Dr Sarah Kennedy and her students perform Icelandic poetry and songs. And on Saturday the 15th March. Doctor Laura Mani leads a workshop to analyse volcanic risk.
