SPIDERS TANGO KULJIT BHAMRA AND DAVIDE GIOVANNINI
Percussion – led music anyone? This new album demonstrates how versatile – and virtuosic – drums ( and Indian tabla ) can be. Especially when musicians as adventurous as the young Villers Quartet weave their ex tempore strings around the sound.
Kuljit Bhamra and Davide Giovannini write and produce together and Spiders Tango their latest disc is a spin off from an exciting stage show. Stay cool with this new approach, it rewards a good listen. Kuljit is a Tabla player and uses a two piece drum , low and high usually with more than one table at a time. Davide is the drummer.
“ We have explored working with drums in a melodic way.’ Says Kuljiit ‘Usually people think it’s about making a noise but Davide has tuned his drums”
“ I can play a second line to my voice and harmonize and create base lines.” Davide says “ We have also tuned the drums to match the note of the table we can changes scales and make melodies. We even have a melody carried by the drums.”
“It’s all about the momentum, if we understand the momentum and movement it harmonizes everything . It’s something else. To be really in the space to be creating that particular feeling it’s the best a musician can experience.
To be on the stage with people with different instincts, I am honoured and happy to bring in this creation and share with a much larger audience.”
Hans Zimmer, the German film score composer and record producer who integrates electronic music sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements. declares ‘In music you have a conversation and an answer’
The Spider Tango artists agree
‘Sharing that music with you. It is very important’
The most adventurous listen all year? Quite possibly.
