THE SNAIL AND THE WHALE
If my little grandson is anything to go by, very small and very big animals are a constant source of fascination. He loves snails. He adores whales (though there aren’t too many to see in his garden). So, when a children’s story has both snail and whale interest, it can’t go wrong. ‘The Snail and the Whale’, a play with music comes to the Arts Theatre now coming out of its enforced shell and flashing its great tail with joy.
The story is inspired by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best seller. We join an adventurous young girl and her seafaring father as they reimagine the story of a tiny snail’s incredible journey around the world. Longing to see the world, a tiny sea snail hitches a lift on the tail of a great big, grey-blue humpback whale. Together they go on an amazing journey but when the whale gets beached, how will the snail save him?
The production, suitable for those aged four and upward, is presented by Tall Stories, the Olivier Award-nominated company that brought The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom to the stage. Tall Stories are dab hands at physical storytelling and using original music and so this show promises to be great fun for all ages AND all sizes – yes, big and small.
